SAS&T-Leh, University of Ladakh, Commemorates World Earth Day 2025 with Awareness and Action

Leh, 22 April 2025: The School of Agricultural Sciences and Technology (SAS&T), Stakna, Leh Campus, University of Ladakh, today observed World Earth Day 2025 with a series of educational and environmental activities held under the guidance of Professor Dorjay Namgyal, Associate Director, SAS&T, Leh.

The programme was honoured by the presence of esteemed faculty members including Dr Deldan Namgail, Dr Kunzes Angmo, and Dr Anwar Hussain. The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from B.Sc. Agriculture students and trainees of the Basic Agriculture programme.

The event commenced with an inaugural address by Dr Kunzes Angmo, Assistant Professor, who eloquently introduced the significance of Earth Day and the reasons for its global observance. She underlined the urgent need for sustainable living practices—particularly within the agricultural sector—and addressed key environmental challenges including deforestation, biodiversity loss, and climate change.

As part of the day's activities, a quiz competition was conducted, with students divided into four teams—Team A, B, C, and D. The quiz covered crucial themes such as sustainable agriculture, climate change, environmental conservation, and Ladakh’s unique ecological challenges. Team C emerged victorious, showcasing commendable awareness and understanding of the issues at hand.

In his keynote address, Professor Dorjay Namgyal stressed the importance of tree plantation and environmental stewardship among the youth. He urged students to become active advocates for climate action and highlighted the growing challenge of climate-induced displacement, citing Kulum village in Ladakh as a real-time example of a community grappling with severe water scarcity due to shifting climatic patterns.

Professor Namgyal further raised concerns about the pervasive use of plastic and the escalating threat of microplastics to human and ecological health. He called for urgent transitions away from fossil fuels towards renewable energy sources, aligning with this year’s Earth Day theme: “Our Power, Our Planet.” He also encouraged students to engage in writing and research on subjects such as climate change, environmental migration, and the implications of urbanisation in ecologically sensitive regions like Ladakh.

The observance concluded with a tree plantation drive on the campus premises, symbolising a collective commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable futures.

The University of Ladakh remains committed to promoting environmental consciousness, sustainability, and scientific inquiry in the interest of preserving Ladakh's unique and fragile ecosystem.
